Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross

Mother’s Day is full of flowers, love and attention. Earth Day is considered an international event. But on Good Friday, the cross is all but forgotten. Now don’t get me wrong, I love my mother and celebrate mother’s day with great joy. However, I am impressed by the lack of attention I give to the cross on Good Friday.

Maybe I think that considering the cross requires too much of me. As I reflect on the cross, it causes me to consider my sin that necessitated Jesus’ crucifixion. The cross requires me to go to places in my heart that I don’t want to go. I am willing for my heart to be broken over the poverty, injustice and suffering in the world, but I struggle to have my heart broken over my own sin.

As I gaze at the cross I am changed remembering that Jesus died for sinners such as me - an unmerited voluntary act of indescribable love. No other day has such meaning and impact for my life. This is a day to be remembered!!

For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:21 New Living Translation)

Join me tomorrow in remembering with solemnity the suffering, anguish and pain Christ endured for us so that we might be reconciled to our Father.
